The Courage of a Mother. The Bravery of a Son.

In this true story set before and during World War II, a young family in the coal country of West Virginia faces abandonment, insecurity and death before ultimately finding love and contentment.

Abandoned by her father, Verlie Agnes Miller and her mother end up living with her grandparents in the hills of Boone County, West Virginia. There she meets the love of her life, Sidney Richard Chambers, who she is determined to be with, no matter what. Since he feels the same way, their marriage results in three children, a chicken business and a happy few years before his untimely death.

Left alone, Verlie ends the chicken business, goes to work in town and raises her three children as best she can before the start of World War II. Her oldest child, and only son, is soon to be drafted when he decides to join the paratroopers as it will provide more money for his family.

After strenuous months of training in the US and camps all over the United Kingdom, he jumps into France on D-Day and courageously leads his troops in battle after battle across Normandy before making the ultimate sacrifice.

Now Verlie is left with her grief, her girls and her incredible strength to carry on with this life without her husband and her son. A life she never wanted and certainly never planned.

It was her courageous heart, which she passed on to her precious boy, that carried her through. A heart that was courageous until the very end.
